Soroptimist International of the Americas, Inc., a global volunteer organization that provides women and girls with access to the education and training they need to achieve economic empowerment, welcomes Sanjay Sharma as its new chief financial officer.

A certified public accountant, Sharma brings more than 20 years of global experience in corporate and nonprofit accounting environments. Most recently, he served as global controller for Women Who Code, an international nonprofit dedicated to inspiring women to excel in technology careers. In this role, Sharma led all aspects of accounting, including billing, financial statements, general ledger, payroll, budgeting, tax compliance, revenue recognition, and special project analysis. He also collaborated closely with the board of directors to develop financial objectives and report progress against goals.

Aside from his technical expertise, Sharma is passionate about the Soroptimist mission, which matches his strong upbringing, belief in gender equality, and economic empowerment through education.

During my life, I have seen the inequality that women have to endure. I am extremely proud and honored to bring my global experience and fiscal expertise to Soroptimist, an organization instrumental in women’s economic empowerment by providing life-changing opportunities through education.

With a career that has spanned both the corporate and nonprofit worlds, Sharma brings exceptional insight to Soroptimist. He is adept at analyzing policies, procedures, and fiscal data as he is in fostering teamwork, advancing DEIB, and promoting gender equality. As Soroptimist’s new chief financial officer, Sharma will oversee Soroptimists’ finance and general administration teams.

“I am excited to welcome Sanjay,” says Michelle Burnett, Soroptimist executive director & CEO. “His extensive experience working with nonprofit organizations and passion for our mission to empower women and girls will be a great addition to our team.”

Sharma holds a masters in accounting and finance degree from the prestigious London School of Economics & Political Science in London, England. Sharma will officially join the team on Monday, March 28.

Headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, Soroptimist provides women and girls with access to the education and training they need to achieve economic empowerment through its Dream Programs, which include the Live Your Dream: Education and Training Awards for Women® and Dream It, Be It: Career Support for Girls®. A 501(c)(3) organization that relies on charitable donations to support its programs, Soroptimist comprises a global network of volunteers across North America, Latin America and the Pacific Rim. Soroptimist also powers LiveYourDream.org®—an online community that offers volunteer opportunities in support of women and girls.
