Philadelphia, PA —Soroptimist recently received two prestigious “Power of A Awards” from the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE), which annually recognizes a select number of associations that distinguish themselves with innovative, effective and broad-reaching programs and activities that positively impact America and the world.
Soroptimist is a global volunteer organization of women who work to improve the lives of disadvantaged women and girls through programs leading to economic empowerment. The organization also powers LiveYourDream.org, an online community that encourages on- and offline action on behalf of women and girls.
ASAE chose the Soroptimist Dream It, Be It: Career Support for Girls program as a 2017 Power of A Summit Award winner. Dream It, Be It helps at-risk secondary school girls who face obstacles to their future success by providing them with access to professional role models, career education and the resources to live their dreams. To date, the new program has benefited more than 8,000 girls. The Summit Award is ASAE’s highest award given to associations that make exemplary commitments to creating a stronger America and the world. Soroptimist is one of only six associations chosen for this honor.
In addition, ASAE named the Soroptimist Live Your Dream: Education and Training Grants for Women a 2017 Power of A Gold Award winner. The program helps disadvantaged women who provide the primary source of financial support for their families by giving them the resources they need to improve their education, skills and employment prospects, Each year, Soroptimist awards about $2 million in grants to more than 1,200 women, many of whom face enormous obstacles including poverty, domestic and sexual violence, substance abuse and death of a spouse. The program is unique in that Live Your Dream Award recipients may use the cash grant to offset any costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education—such as books, childcare, tuition and transportation. ASAE selected the Live Your Dream Awards as one of only 23 Gold winners from over 150 entries.
“Providing disadvantaged women and girls with access to quality education is the key to women’s economic empowerment and equality. Dream It, Be It puts girls on the path to success, and our Live Your Dream Awards help keep women on the positive path they’ve already chosen by eliminating financial barriers. We are so proud to accelerate the rate at which women and girls can step up and realize their true potential,” said Soroptimist Executive Director & CEO Elizabeth M. Lucas. “And, we are elated to receive this honor from ASAE and to be recognized for our efforts.”
The Power of A Awards celebrate the extraordinary contributions associations make to society by enriching lives, creating a competitive workforce, preparing society for the future, driving innovation and making a better world. Soroptimist will be recognized at ASAE’s 18th Annual Summit Awards Dinner on October 4, 2017 at the National Building Museum in Washington, DC, which brings together association executives, government officials, and business and community leaders for an evening to celebrate the value of associations and their impact on society.
