WHITE PAPER ABSTRACT: Legal Issues Addressing Human Trafficking
Legal issues addressing human trafficking can be complex and confusing. International, national, state and local laws exist addressing the crime of modern day slavery, the enforcement of those laws and the punishments. The United States is a signatory to the United Nations’ Palermo Protocol and is also bound by the federal Trafficking Victims Protection Act. In addition, states have passed laws to address the issue as well. This white paper, produced by Soroptimist International of the Americas, seeks to explain the differences, strengths and weaknesses of these various levels of law and point a way forward for the women and girls who live as slaves in the world today.
