Women and HIV/AIDS

Today, HIV/AIDS infects and affects more women than ever before, accounting for nearly half the 40 million people living with the disease worldwide. While a variety of economic, cultural, religious, political, biological and sexual factors make women more vulnerable to HIV/AIDS than men, pervasive gender inequality is at the root of the spread of the pandemic, especially in developing countries. In this white paper, Soroptimist International of the Americas, explores the many factors making women vulnerable to HIV/AIDS, as well as the devastating consequences of the disease. Unless the global and national communities respond immediately to the pandemic, women can look to a bleak future. Therefore, solutions discussed in this white paper are actions that must be taken seriously and begin without delay.
