PHILADELPHIA, Pa.–Sharon Fisher of Port Moody, British Columbia, is serving a one-year term as president of the board of directors for Soroptimist, an international volunteer organization for business and professional women who work to improve the lives of women and girls, in local communities and throughout the world. As president, Fisher oversees strategic planning and program development for the organization. She will also help Soroptimist meet the goals of its Renaissance Campaign 2011: Strategies for Progress—a plan to strengthen the organization’s brand.
Fisher is a member of Soroptimist International of The Langleys, British Columbia, one of 3,100 Soroptimist clubs that exist to improve conditions for local women and girls. A member since 1986, Fisher has held several leadership positions including region treasurer and club president, as well as having served on various committees. A self-employed entrepreneur, she currently works as director and chief financial officer of a crime-analysis software company.
“Empowering women plays a key role in achieving progress around the world. This makes our mission, programs and club projects more relevant than ever,” Fisher said. “It is important to recognize that every major social change comes about through very small simple actions that spread like wildfire. The smallest actions can make a big difference in the lives of women. I am honored, excited, passionate, and committed to serve as Soroptimist president to the best of my ability.”
In addition to her Soroptimist activities, Fisher is a member and immediate past president (first ever female president) of the Tyee Club of British Columbia, a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering interest in Canada's largest game fish; past Grand Factor of the Native Daughters of British Columbia, an organization whose mandate is to preserve the history of British Columbia; and past chair of the Langley Centennial Museum Advisory Committee.
Headquartered in Philadelphia, Pa., Soroptimist offers programs that improve the lives of women and girls through social and economic empowerment. Its major program, the Soroptimist Women’s Opportunity Awards, provides cash grants for women seeking to improve their lives with the help of additional education and training. Each year, about $1.5 million is disbursed to deserving women through this award-winning program. Soroptimist, a 501(c)(3) organization that relies on charitable donations to support its programs, also sponsors the Live Your Dream campaign in recognition of the power of women and their dreams.
