Global impact: Violet Richardson Award

If we can brighten the day and lives of a few girls, we change it for all the disadvantaged girls by spreading the word... we are the future leaders of the world. If we can give each other confidence, nothing can stop us.
- Allyson Ahlstrom, 2011 Violet Richardsom Award Recipient

Each year Soroptimist is proud to honor the volunteer and leadership efforts of young women between the ages of 14-17 through the Soroptimist Violet Richardson Award. This program recognizes girls who are learning about themselves and their dreams, while giving selflessly to those in need. The Violet Richardson Award is named after the first president of the first Soroptimist club, whose motto was, “It’s what you do that counts.” impact of Violet Richardson Award scholarships for girls

During the 2010-2011 club year, 742 clubs participated, recognizing 854 girls whose volunteer and leadership actions have made their community and the world a better place. Across the federation, SIA awarded $272,573 to girls and $153,536 to their volunteer organizations.

To measure our impact, SIA sends surveys to recipients three years after they receive the award. In 2010-2011, survey results showed:

100% of respondents are still volunteering

43% of respondents reported that their volunteer work is focused on women and girls.

86% of respondents reported that the award increased their self-confidence.
