Help Level the "Paying Field": Support Fair Pay for Women
Does your senator support fair pay for women? See how your senator voted on the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and demand that the Senate votes on this issue soon.
Women in the United States are still paid only 77 cents for every dollar earned by men. For women of color, the numbers are even worse—African American women earn 63 cents and Latinas earn 52 cents for every dollar paid to white men. But, in a recent decision, Ledbetter v. Goodyear (2007), the U.S. Supreme Court sharply limited pay-discrimination suits based on gender under Title VII.
On April 23, the Senate failed to pass a vote to move forward with the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act (H.R. 2831). The goal of the bill was to overturn the Supreme Court decision that gives victims only 180 days from the first incident of pay discrimination to file suit—regardless of whether they are aware of the discrimination or the amount of time the discrimination occurred. The message to employers: it is fine to institute pay discrimination based on gender as long as you can keep it a secret for 180 days.
