Haitian Earthquake
On January 12, 2010, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti just outside its capital, Port au Prince. It was the largest earthquake to hit Haiti in the past 200 years. The earthquake has destroyed Haiti’s weak infrastructure and has killed nearly 200,000 people.
Soroptimist is devoted to addressing the unique circumstances and needs of women and girls’ following the earthquake in Haiti. When disaster strikes, women and girls become susceptible to increased physical and sexual violence, are more vulnerable to sex trafficking, are burdened with increased care-giving responsibilities, and often lack mobility and access to resources.
President Obama has named the USAID administrator Dr. Rajiv Shah to oversee the response and has assigned Southern Command deputy Lt. Gen. P.K. Keen to head a joint task force and coordinate the response. Contact these United States government leaders in the Haitian relief effort and urge them to take into consideration the unique circumstances and needs of the women and girls in Haiti.
