The Healthy Media for Youth Act
According to a recent study on girls, media and body image, nearly 90 percent of girls believe that the media places a lot of pressure on teenage girls to be thin; and over half of the girls surveyed admit they diet to lose weight.
Additionally, three of the most common mental health problems among girls—eating disorders, depression or depressed mood and low self-esteem—are linked to the sexualization of girls and women in the media.
To counter media messages that promote unattainable, unhealthy and sexualized female body images, Representatives Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) and Shelley Moore Capito (R-W. Va) have introduced the Healthy Media for Youth Act (H.R. 4925).
If passed, the Healthy Media for Youth Act will:
- Support media literacy programs for youth.
- Facilitate research on the role and impact of depictions of girls and women in the media.
- Establish a National Taskforce on Women and Girls in the Media.
Act Now! to help create healthier media images of women and girls.
